Auch andere Länder haben absolute Vollhonks als Golfjournalisten. Der jüngste Fall totaler Hirnlosigkeit ereignete sich in Kanada. Dort wurde in der Montreal Gazette ein Text von Randy Phillips, einem Agenturschreiber, veröffentlicht,  der an Dummheit schwer zu schlagen ist. Die Überschrift gibt schon mal einen kurze Inhaltsangabe: “Long, belly putters give golfers unfair advantage”. So so.

Der Einstieg haut in die gleiche Kerbe: “The United States Golf Association and R&A — gatekeepers of how the grand old game is played — missed the boat when they had the chance to ban the use of belly putters and long putters years ago.”

Warum Phillips die langen Dinger so scheiße findet, erfährt man wenig später: “I always say don’t knock something until you’ve tried it, but I intensely dislike both long putters and belly putters, and I’ve never tried either one. I refuse to, because as a traditionalist I find them an aberration, and I believe they provide golfers with an advantage they shouldn’t be allowed under the Rules of Golf.”

Der Beweis für den unfairen Vorteil liegt für Phillips natürlich auf der Hand, schließlich wurden die letzten beiden Turnier von Typen mit Besenstiel-Puttern gewonnen. Außerdem hat er sich von einem Puttingguru erklären lassen, dass die Teile Gold sind.

Der Text wird allerdings noch abstruser: “Long putters are also used by quite a number of players on the Champions Tour to either to steady their strokes or protect against failing backs. I take no issue with those on the 50-and-over circuit using the long putters, since they can also use carts in the golden years of their careers. They’ve earned that right.”
